ÄRNI BLUM (formerly NirgiWabrik) is a luxury knitwear brand from Saaremaa, Estonia. Our knitwear is crafted with care and love by the nimble women of Saaremaa, both hand-knitted on needles and on a knitting machine designed for hobby knitters. We strongly emphasize sustainability – we knit products on a zero-waste principle, directly to the finished cut, using only organic, natural, and certified yarns. To prevent overconsumption, most of our sweaters and cardigans are made to order. This makes the waiting time a bit longer, but the knitwear certainly more special.
For designer Johanna Paiste, knitwear fashion is a form of self-expression into which she pours her whole heart. The knitwear is inspired by large, fluffy forms and textures. The main keywords in the designs are quality, luxury, details, timeless classic, and most importantly – comfort. Where does the name ÄRNI BLUM come from?
Ärni Blum was the name of the brand’s designer Johanna’s beloved grandfather at birth, before Estonianization. Ärni was an incredibly chic and amiable gentleman, an art lover in a hat, red bow tie, and velvet indigo blue tailor-made suit, who appreciated creativity, craftsmanship, details, quality, beauty, and timeless classic. Johanna felt from a young age that she and her grandfather shared a spirit and had inherited much from him. In addition, her grandfather’s birth name Ärni Blum seemed so fascinating to her that she used it as her pseudonym in art class as a child. So, what could be a better name for the renewed brand than ÄRNI BLUM?

This minimizes yarn usage, making our production waste-free.
If there are occasional remnants from some products, we creatively use them in other products and special projects.

We value quality and material durability. NirgiWabrik’s yarns primarily come from Italy and Japan.
Most of the Yarns We Use are Biodegradable
We primarily use 100% natural and therefore biodegradable yarns.
