Ärni Blum’s yarn world is colorful!
We don’t start with the yarn for our knits; instead, we look for the right yarn for our new idea.
Often, we combine different yarns, which can make the material content of our products especially exciting.
Our favorite combination is 100% extrafine merino wool and silk mohair. For example, our customers’ favorites, the LU cardigan and the Jasmin sweater, are knitted from this blend.
All our yarns are chosen with care and love, and they mainly come to us from Italy and Japan.
Merino Wool
100% extrafine merino wool
Country of origin: Italy
Fine and soft merino wool is obtained from the undercoat of merino sheep. Merino wool regulates
body temperature, meaning it keeps you comfortably warm in cold weather and cools you down and allows your body to breathe in warm weather. Merino wool is soft against the skin and doesn’t itch. Merino wool wicks moisture away from the skin, so you don’t get cold when sweating, and merino wool products don’t start to smell even after several days of wear. Knits made from merino are resilient and don’t wrinkle easily. Merino wool products are easy to care for because they tolerate machine wool wash programs well.
Cashmere Yarn
70% superfine merino, 30% ultrafine cashmere
Country of origin: Italy
Cashmere wool is obtained from cashmere goats, which originate from the slopes of the Himalayas in Tibet. Did you know that a sheep can yield up to 6 kg of wool in one shearing, but a cashmere goat only produces 300-500 g of fiber per year? Since pure cashmere fibers are extremely expensive, they are often blended with other fibers.
The cashmere yarn used at Ärni Blum is also blended with “extrafine” merino wool, which makes this yarn exceptionally versatile. Cashmere wool is considered the most luxurious and expensive natural textile due to its extraordinary softness and warmth. At the same time, merino wool regulates body temperature and is easy to care for. Therefore, products knitted from such an excellent combination of yarns are ideal for year-round use.
Alpaca Wool
100% alpaca wool
Country of origin: Italy
Certificates: FSC certification, chemical management 4sustainability, RCS certification
Alpaca wool comes from alpacas, which belong to the camelid family and originate from South America. Alpaca wool is a soft, very warm, and valuable fiber. The wool is exceptionally strong and durable, doesn’t wrinkle easily, and doesn’t pill. The yarn is highly breathable, lightweight, and has a beautiful natural sheen. Although alpaca wool is not as strong as sheep’s wool, it is 7 times warmer. Alpaca wool is recommended for allergy sufferers because it is softer than sheep’s wool and does not
itch. The wool is water and dirt repellent and easy to care for.
Silk Mohair
mohair 60%, silk 40%
Country of origin: Japan
Mohair – Mohair wool is obtained from the Angora goat, which originally comes from the Himalayan slopes of Tibet. Mohair fiber is warm, light, and durable, and it doesn’t age easily. Mohair has a special luster that comes from light reflection. Mohair products are well-suited for allergy sufferers because they are softer than sheep’s wool. Mohair gives knitwear extraordinary fluffiness and airiness. Mohair is considered a luxurious fiber; it is difficult to obtain and expensive, so mohair is often blended with other fibers. The mohair used in Ärni Blum’s knitwear is also blended with silk.
Silk – Silk fiber is obtained from the cocoons of silkworm larvae. Its production is known to have started as early as 4500 years ago in China. Silk is light, smooth, slippery, and has a characteristic subtle sheen. Silk allows the body to breathe, absorbs moisture well, and also retains heat well. Silk is elastic and doesn’t wrinkle easily. Silk can only withstand gentle washing with lukewarm water and does not tolerate high ironing temperatures.
Cotton
100% Cotton
Country of origin: Italy
Certificates: oeko-tex certification, GOTs certification, fsc certification,
chemical management 4sustainability, RCS certification.
Cotton is obtained from the cotton plant, whose history dates back 7000 years to India and Mexico. Cotton is strong and resistant to abrasion, meaning it doesn’t pill or become static. Cotton is breathable, making knits made from it ideal for summer wear. Cotton absorbs moisture well, but it also takes a long time to dry. Cotton knits are easy to care for and wash.
Cotton and Polyamide Blend Yarn
70% cotton and 30% polyamide
Country of origin: Italy
Certificates: GOTS certificate
Polyamide is a chemical fiber made from petroleum. The presence of polyamide in wool helps knitwear last longer; products are stronger, hold their shape well, and drape nicely. Polyamide does not tolerate high temperatures during washing.

the knitwear retain its shape better.
Sheep’s Wool
100% Sheep’s Wool
Country of origin: Italy
Wool refers to the fiber mass obtained from shearing or combing animals. The most common wool fiber is sheep’s wool. Wool fiber has a long history – it is the oldest known animal textile fiber. Woolen knits are warm, breathable, wrinkle little, and absorb moisture slowly. Sheep’s wool knits felt more easily and can be coarser than other yarns we use.
Alpaca and Polyamide Blend Yarn
75% Alpaca Wool and 25% Polyamide
Country of origin: Italy
Certificates: GOTS, FSC certification, chemical management 4sustainability, RCS certification
To all the good properties of alpaca wool, a touch of durability is added with polyamide.
Polyamide is a chemical fiber made from petroleum.
The polyamide content in wool makes products stronger, helps them hold their shape, and thanks to this, the knitwear drapes well. Polyamide does not tolerate high temperatures during washing.
